Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing in 95% oxygen while inside a specially designed chamber that can be pressurized above atmospheric pressure. HBOT is used to treat a variety of medical conditions and is based on the principle that increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to the body can help to promote healing and reduce inflammation.
The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy dates back to the 17th century when it was used to treat decompression sickness in divers. Today, HBOT is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including wounds that are slow to heal, radiation injuries, and carbon monoxide poisoning.
HBOT works by increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to the body, which helps to promote healing and reduce inflammation. When a person breathes in oxygen at atmospheric pressure, the oxygen is transported throughout the body by hemoglobin in the blood. However, when a person is inside a hyperbaric chamber, the increased pressure causes more oxygen to dissolve in the blood plasma, which can reach areas that are not well-perfused by blood vessels. This can help to promote the growth of new blood vessels and reduce inflammation.
In addition to increasing oxygen delivery to the body, HBOT also has other beneficial effects. It can help to stimulate the immune system, promote the growth of new tissue, and reduce swelling and pain. HBOT has also been shown to have antimicrobial effects, which can help to fight infections.
HBOT is typically delivered as a series of treatments, with each session lasting between 30 minutes and 2 hours. The number of sessions required depends on the condition being treated, but typically ranges from 5 to 40 sessions. During a session, the patient is placed inside the hyperbaric chamber and the pressure is gradually increased to the desired level. The patient then breathes in 95% oxygen through a mask or nasal cannula for the duration of the treatment.
One of the most common uses of HBOT is to treat wounds that are slow to heal, such as those that occur in people with diabetes or peripheral artery disease. HBOT has been shown to increase the amount of oxygen delivered to the wound, which can help to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection. In addition, HBOT has been shown to be effective in treating radiation injuries, such as those that occur in people who have undergone radiation therapy for cancer. HBOT can help to reduce inflammation and promote the growth of new tissue, which can help to repair damage caused by radiation.
HBOT has also been shown to be effective in treating carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels such as gas, oil, and wood. When a person breathes in carbon monoxide, it binds to hemoglobin in the blood, preventing it from carrying oxygen to the body's tissues. This can lead to a range of symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and confusion. In severe cases, carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal. HBOT can help to increase the amount of oxygen delivered to the body, which can help to reduce the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning and prevent long-term damage.
HBOT has also been used to treat a range of other conditions, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, and multiple sclerosis.
HBOT is generally considered to be safe, although there are some risks associated with the treatment. The most common side effects of HBOT include ear pain, sinus pain, and temporary changes in vision. In rare cases, HBOT can cause lung damage or seizures. HBOT should not be used in people with certain medical conditions, such as untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung).
